FeedDemon 1.6: Finding New Feeds

Over the past few weeks I’ve highlighted several new features in the upcoming FeedDemon 1.6 that have been designed with more advanced users in mind, but I haven’t forgotten those new to RSS.

Among the biggest hurdles to RSS beginners is simply finding feeds. Most aggregators provide a default set of feeds to help people get started, but I wanted to go beyond this and enable searching outside of FeedDemon for feeds of interest. So, starting with FeedDemon 1.6 RC2 (due real soon now, I swear), you’ll be able to perform keyword searches for new feeds.

Rather than go into any great detail about it, I’ll simply post a screenshot:

  1. Wow that looks insanely useful!
I was just wondering Nick, who would I have to talk (email) to at the company to get some of my ideas put out? I have a few guys working on an RSS reader for me, we are expecting to launch 1Q 06, but I would really like to see what you can do with the ideas presented.

  2. Nick, your creativity amazes me!
I hope that fits somehow in the existing search options/functions in FeedDemon, since it looks similar to a “Keyword subscription”, or was it a “Tag subscription”? Or a search in the “Search dropdown”? You get the idea.

  3. Introducing blogs, RSS

One of the first questions that I’m asked by someone I’m giving a short and sweet intro or lesson on blogs is: Where do I find them? To me, it’s kind of a funny question, but that’s just because I’m…

  4. Okay, this is why you’re the king of software development … thinking of things to add BEFORE we even know we need them. Phooey to all those guys who wait until we’re crying out for features, then provide them only at greatly inflated prices!!!

  5. Hi Nick, it seems that “Find Feeds” does not support chinese.
Will you improve this function in the future?

  6. Stefan, your best bet is to email support-at-newsgator-dot-com – they should put you in touch with the right person.
Uma, can you try NewsGator Online’s search form (http://www.newsgator.com/ngs/subscriber/FindSub.aspx )and check whether it works with Chinese? That would help determine where the problem is. Also, could you post your reply in the FeedDemon Beta Forum (http://www.newsgator.com/forum/ ) rather than here – that way, it will be seen by our support team. Thanks!

  7. This looks a great feature, Nick. I can’t get it to work, though.
No matter what key word I enter in the search box, I get zero results. Even tried ‘fishing’ as per your screenshot – zero results.
    I am online ;)
Is there something else in FD I need to do to make this work? FYI, I just installed 1.6.0.11 RC 2 but it didn’t work for me with the prior RC2 either.
In any event, FD 1.6 RC2 really is excellent work.

  8. Unrelated to this post, but related FeedDemon 1.6 RC2:
There any way that feeddemon only show channer (or feed) with unread items and no all the feeds (like Newsgator online)??
